If you are goin to store your own water, be sure to use only PETE plastic bottles, with rubber gaskets fixed into the caps of the bottles.

Iodine can be used instead of chlorine, for purification and preservation of your water.  It may be better for you, too, as iodine is a nutrient, wheras Cl2 is a free radical, if I understand the chemistry aright.

For emergency food storage of canned food, you will have to replace your stock every 3-4 years or so.  But for dried wheat, salt, sugar, lentils, and so on, if you pack them rightly, you can leave them alone for up to 30 years.  This triplet of videos tells to you all about it:
